This section of the website is meant to serve as a portal to information about Building Information Modeling. Here you will find resources to understand what the term means and what B.I.M. can do for you. Whereas the rest of this web site present resources for one particular tool set - i.e. ArchiCAD and other Graphisoft tools for virtual building - this page and links from it will attempt to be as vendor neutral as is possible.
The Road to B.I.M.
The call for a new term for the next generation of computer assisted design was set forth by Jerry Laiserin, a well known CAD/IT pundit in a newsletter article dated December 16, 2002. In this article, Laiserin invited all the major players to adopt the rubric of a single term for a new paradigm and place less emphasis on description that they might have trademarked or set to use in their own product positioning.
Laiserin organized debates, published responses and white papers from the player as he saw them: notably Autodesk, Bentley Systems and Graphisoft. The result seems to be that the acronym has stuck and that it has become a useful, if not always accurate, term for computer assisted design that a) exploits a 3D model; and, b) places a lsesser emphasis on 2D vector based CAD.
